Creative Idea #1

Use colourful items as a fun and tactile way of keeping your child engaged and involving them in your prayer time together.

Find four toys, cushions, pieces of material or even colouring pencils – each in a different colour to represent the four types of prayer.

Have fun distributing the items to each person who is joining in on the prayer. Get the whole family involved! Or, if it’s just you and your child, take two each.

Let your child pick which ones they want or choose randomly. Just make sure it’s different each night.

Once everyone has an item, take turns praying. This not only gives your child practice praying different types of prayers, it also gives you a wonderful opportunity to model praying to them. So keep your prayers short, simple and God-focused, and help them do the same. If your child is too young to speak, you could start by praying them all, and as your child grows, encourage them to do more and more, until eventually they are praying all four by themselves.

Creative Idea #2

Encourage your child to use crafting, writing, drawing or painting to reflect on things they can turn into Wow God, Thank You, Sorry or Please prayers.

They could paint four pictures or create four scenes with action figures expressing something that relates to each one. Let them be creative and use whatever they are interested in to explore these ideas. Then talk through whatever they have made and use them as a prompt for your prayer together.

As they grow older, you could invest in a sketch pad or journal that they can keep by their bed.

Then, before you pray, give them time to write or draw things that they want to pray about.

Kids can often find it difficult to articulate or discuss some things with you, but these creative tools will help your child process and pray about the things that are on their mind. It will also give you a precious insight into how they see the world. You will learn what moves them to praise, what things they are grateful for, what sin they are aware of, and what longings fill their heart.
